Last year, we went around our neighborhood handing boxes of Ramadan goodies to my neighbors, almost all of whom are non-Muslim. Everybody whom we got to meet and speak to was incredibly nice and kind. We even got a lovely thank you card from one neighbor who wasn't home when we dropped by.
This year I'm a little nervous. A lot of the old neighbors have moved away and a lot of new people have moved in. With the whole Islamophobia atmosphere going around, I'm not sure how someone will react to a Hijabi woman at their door.
I think it's still important to go though. I really don't have any other interactions with my neighbors and it would be nice to at least meet them and let them know they have a Muslim family nearby who only wishes them well.
So today, #17, I'm grateful for so many things. For my country, for my neighbors, for building bridges and for attempting to break stereotypes.
