Day 8

  • I like things to be organized. I like for everything to have its absolute perfect spot and sometimes my biggest thrills come from spending hours organizing something no one but me will see.

  • This is not always a good thing. Take for example, my cabinet. I spent hours organizing it.
  • Meticulously putting labels on everything. Then when the labels started rubbing off, I meticulously re-labeled everything and put a coat of clear nail polish on top so they wouldn't rub off again.
  •
I will gladly spend my time doing this (and take pride in it), but I will neglect things that are actually important and require my time. Work-related, education-related and home-related. And this is a privilege.

  • It is a privilege to live in a society, in a place where I am free to waste my time as I choose. It is privilege to be able to choose what I want to do with my time at this current moment; what I want to use my skills for right now, however pointless.

  • And then, I often wonder about people in third-world countries whose primary concern is finding food and water for each day. I wonder about the talents they have hidden in them. Are they talented writers, artists, athletes? Would they make great doctors, lawyers, engineers? Is there amongst them the next Einstein, Federer Shakespeare? The world will never know, because they don't have the privileges I have. Or the basic necessities required for life.

So it goes without saying that today, #8, I am grateful for all of my privilege. And also ashamed. Because while I sit organizing a spice cabinet, others are scrounging for the 'privilege' of their next meal. And I have done nothing to help.
